Fall Protection Lanyard
Protecting What Matters Most
When you rely on a fall protection lanyard, your life may depend on it. Whether you’re working at height on a tower, scaffold, or industrial site, it’s critical that your equipment is inspected, tested, and certified according to ASME and CSA standards. At Hercules Crane and Lifting Solutions, we offer expert fall protection lanyard certification and inspection services designed to ensure your gear is up to the task every time.
Canadian law mandates that fall protection lanyards must undergo annual certification. However, more frequent inspections may be required depending on the usage environment and intensity. Our technicians inspect for damage, discoloration, and activation of energy absorbers. Any unit showing signs of a fall must be immediately removed and destroyed.
We understand that nothing is more important than going home safe. That’s why we take fall protection lanyard certification seriously. Bring your lanyards to one of our many Canadian facilities—or let our Mobile Testing Unit come to you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about fall protection lanyard inspection and certification.
In Canada the Fall Protection industry recognizes the following standards:
- CSA Z259.11 Personal Energy Absorbers and Lanyards
- ANSI Z359.1 Safety requirements for personal fall arrest systems, subsystems and components (Alberta only)
A thorough examination shall be carried out by a competent person at least every year or more frequently according to statutory regulations, manufactures recommendations, environment, type of use and past records.
- Inspect the lanyard labels to verify that they are present and legible. Check the formal inspection grid to be sure a formal inspection has been performed within the time frame required.
- Inspect energy absorbers for evidence of deployment. Remove from service and destroy energy absorbers with evidence of deployment. Inspect for elongation and/or separation of webbing layers and/or appearance of webbing outside the pouch.
- Inspect all fabric parts, including webbing and stitching. Remove the lanyard from service if significant fraying, severe wear, cuts, burns, abrasion, discoloration or other damage occurs.
- Inspect all metallic parts for evidence of damage, alteration and missing parts.
- Inspect snap hooks for deformation, fractures, cracks, corrosion, deep pitting, burrs, sharp edges, cuts, loose parts, and evidence of excessive heat or chemical exposure.
- Check snap hook function. Unlock, open, close, and lock several times. Gate must automatically close and snugly seat against nose. The locking mechanism must retain the gate tip within 1/8 inch (3 mm) of the nose when firm pressure is applied to the gate.
- Inspect all plastic parts for cuts, breaks, alteration, excessive wear, missing and loose parts. Inspect for evidence of burns, excessive heat or chemical attack.
- Inspect each component and subsystem of the complete system in accordance with the associated manufacturer’s instructions
- Store the lanyard in a cool, dry and clean place out of direct sunlight. Avoid areas where heat, moisture, light, oil, and chemicals or their vapors or other degrading elements may be present. Equipment which is damaged or in need of maintenance should not be stored in the same area as usable equipment. Heavily soiled, wet, or otherwise contaminated equipment should be properly maintained (e.g. dried and cleaned) prior to storage. Prior to using equipment which has been stored for long periods of time, a formal inspection should be performed by a competent person.
