The Columbus McKinnon Little Mule LMG4501A Hot Line Wire Grip, part number 04499W, is a 5000 lb capacity parallel-jaw grip designed with aggressive teeth for demanding utility wire applications. The manufacturer specifies the LMG4501A for Extra-High-Strength Cable (EHSC/EHS) and messenger guy wire within a 0.18 to 0.60 in size range, corresponding to 6 AWG through 4/0 AWG. Columbus McKinnon notes that extra-high-strength cable is harder than standard guy strand and requires a more aggressive grip, making the aggressive-tooth configuration an important feature of this model.

Unlike the non-spring-loaded LMG4502 and LMG4503, the LMG4501A features a spring-loaded gate and a notched handle. Columbus McKinnon's notched-handle design allows a spring-loaded grip to be locked in the open position during placement on or removal from the wire and then released immediately. As a hot line model, it also incorporates the manufacturer's special gate plate to help keep an open grip from falling off the wire before the pull begins.

The grip is built from forged steel for durability and field handling and includes the large handle eye opening used throughout the Little Mule wire grip line for connection to standard hooks and tackle blocks. Columbus McKinnon also updated the aggressive jaw on part number 04499W to a black chromate finish effective January 2025, providing a visual distinction between the aggressive jaw and fine-jaw versions while maintaining corrosion protection.
