The Petzl MAESTRO S is a professional descender with an integrated progress-capture pulley, designed for rope rescue, rigging, and technical rope access operations requiring controlled load lowering and hauling capability in a single device. With a working load limit of 250 kg, the MAESTRO S is suited for handling personnel and equipment loads in rescue, industrial, and rope access applications. The integrated progress-capture pulley allows the device to function as both a descender and a ratcheting pulley, enabling load hauling, load holding, and controlled descent without the need to transfer the load to a separate device.

The MAESTRO S is compatible with ropes from 10.5 to 11.5 mm in diameter, covering the range of kernmantle ropes commonly used in rescue and rope access systems. The sheave is faceted and runs on sealed ball bearings, providing a pulley efficiency of 0.86 — a high efficiency rating that reduces the effort required to haul loads through a mechanical advantage system. The device is constructed from aluminum, stainless steel, and nylon, balancing strength, corrosion resistance, and weight for demanding field use.

Breaking strength is rated at 18 kN × 2 = 36 kN, and the MAESTRO S is certified to CE EN 12841 type C (rope adjustment device for rope access systems), EN 341 (descending devices), NFPA 2500 Technical Use, and EAC, making it compliant for use in European, North American, and Russian rope rescue and rope access applications. The MAESTRO S is the smaller of the two MAESTRO variants, optimized for single-person loads and technical rescue configurations.
